Starting as a freelance dietitian: Finding the right place

Freelancing tips for dietitian.

After handling all the paperwork involved in starting a business, it's time to find the perfect location for your dream practice. This step is crucial, as it will be where you spend most of your time. Take your time to choose carefully!

1. Choosing the City and District

Start by settling in a city you know well or have lived in for a long time. However, do some research on the existing dietitians in the area:

  • Where are they located?

  • What services do they offer?

  • How do they communicate (website, Google My Business, social media)?

This will help you avoid oversaturated areas and find a unique angle to differentiate yourself. Proximity to city centers and other health professionals can also be advantageous.

2. Defining Your Budget

Opening a practice is great, but it must be profitable. Determine the maximum rent you can afford. While this should be covered in your business plan, real-world adjustments might be necessary. Consider the selected neighborhood, premises services, and charges. Research typical prices in the area and calculate profitability based on patient numbers and revenue goals.

3. Ensuring Accessibility

Your office must be easily accessible for patients. Check:

  • Public transport availability (tram, bus, metro)

  • Car access (ring road, motorway exit) and nearby parking options

  • Internal accessibility (e.g., minimal floors without a lift, compliance with PMR standards for disabled access)

4. Choosing the Type of Premises

Decide whether to take a single office, work from home, or join an existing structure like a multidisciplinary center. Working from home offers autonomy, personalized decoration, lower expenses, but requires permits (mixed-use exemption, change of use request, rental value update). Integrating into a multidisciplinary center offers visibility, professional network, and social contact. Shared offices can be a safe option to start with lower rent commitments.

5. Searching for Premises

With a clear idea of your needs, start searching for your future office. Explore:

  • Online platforms (The good corner, rental sites/apps)

  • Real estate agencies (be mindful of additional costs)

  • Medical and wellness centers

  • Local Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) advisors

Sometimes, simply spreading the word can help find suitable premises.

6. Handling Administrative Tasks

Once you have your premises, ensure all administrative tasks are completed:

  • Premises insurance

  • Civil liability insurance

  • Water-electricity contract

  • Internet connection (high-speed box or 4G)

Now, you can start thinking about furnishing your office and getting ready to welcome your clients!
